I used to live there in the 90's. What exactly do you want to know?

i may be offered a job out there doing pretty much exactly what i am doing here. the job is 26km outside brisbane so could commute with a car/bike and would want to live in brisbane. i have lived abroad before in finland for a year but australia is over the other side of the world so very remote from family and friends. so i want to know what brisbane is like to live for a ex pat, in terms of what it is like to live there? is there a city like it in the uk? just thinking about it and its a big move, so trying to get as much info as possible WN

Brisbane is a city with the feel of a large town. The people are incredibly friendly and there is a large ex-pat community, especially on the Gold Coast which is about a 45 minute drive away (my Dad and brother live there). It's simply not possible to compare it to an English city.
It is remote, but with air travel these days you're only a day away from home if you need to get there. We use Skype & webcam for free face to face chats which helps close the distance.
We're looking at moving out there within the next couple of years as the quality of life is hard to beat. For triathlon training and competing, the Queensland coast has just about everything you'll need. Noosa is only about 60-90 minutes away!
I found it a fairly laid-back place to work. You didn't get many people working late to impress the boss over there. It was much more work-to-live than live-to-work.
If you've got the chance then you really should give it a go. If you don't like it you can always come back. But I doubt you will!

Some people say it is a little stringent on the rules and becoming more so - most people paint a rose tinted impression of Australia because it's homely from a British point of view - but occasionally you'll bump into people who just can't stand the place!

ex pat is such a horrible word it just gives the impression brits abroad doing exactly the same thing they do in britain rather than embracing the culture , but saying that i really enjoyed Australia and Brisbane was fine but prefered Sydney. I was only there for a few months but the standard of living was much better . The Australians in the city and town's were friendly enough but other places were full of rednecks imo

went for a few days earlier in the year.
The fact that the city has an outdoor beach/pool that is open to the public and doe not get shat in, littered and invaded by pikeys as it would in any UK City just about summed it up.
As well as the fact that after 9pm , there were still families out with their kids without fear of having youths with bumfluff moustaches throwing diamond white bottles at them.
