Currently have ultegra 9 speed and find that quite a lot of the time I am 'between' gears and cant quite get comfortable so would like to reduct my cassette to something with closer ratios. Rather than just shove a 12-21 or something on the back I would like to go compact so I still have some easier gears for hills. Do I need to do anything other than buy a compact chainset like the FSA one from wiggle?

OK, put it another way, don't worry about it until the spring when you've finished your winter training phase. You might not have the problem then and if you do, spring is a good time to renew your running gear and have new kit for the season ahead.

Only thinking about it now as I could then put it on my Christmas pressie list - you are of course right - 3 or 4 months of decent solid training could well help the problem

You should be ok with your current mech and shifters, if the chain isn't new its probably worthwhile replacing that at the same time
