Sad news from the week-end's race at Phuket. According to this morning's Metro, a british triathlete collapsed in the swim and did not recover. THis isn't the first such incident and sadly, it won't be the last. Its just a very unfortunate occupational hazard of ours for a very, very small minority. Other news is that, perhaps not surprisingly, Tim Don did not make the final shortlist of ten for this year's SPOTY. Mind you, neither did David Walliams. Now who am I to cast aspersions on the integrity of the Beeb, but do I smell a bit of politics going on here? Would Auntie want somebody who is suspended on a technical drugs bust or a comedian swimmer to grace the evening's festivities? Let the conspiracy theories commence! Dale Cannonman

Bad news indeed.

About the Tim Don news, I didn't expect him to get the support. I wasn't going to put hs name forward, and I wasn't the only one. No matter how great his achievements were in 2006, they are going to be swept under the carpet due to his suspension. The public will assume "no smoke without fire" on the drugs front, and triathletes will want the whole affair forgotten.
Why, oh why this year of all years, Tim?

BB - but are you saying that he didn't get your vote because he either is guilty by inference or was just plain stupid for missing the tests? I firmly believe that the latter was the case, and therefore felt no hypocracy in putting his name forward. But as always, I respect the views of others.

I prefer to call it complacency, though! However, the fact that he has been suspended for missing drug tests means he doesn't have the credibility for us triathletes to put him fortward as an example of your sport. (He would still be suspended at the time of SPOTY wouldn't he?). I wonder what our thoughts had been when we had heard that Christine Ohuruogu was being charged for the very same offence, months before Tim got into trouble. Plus, I'm just SO disappointed. This could have been the year that tri had a specific focus in front of millions of people, not just those of us who watch the London Tri, or see the Olympics. And we would have had a charismatic icon by the name of Tim Don that people would remember, and not just as the son of the football referee, to act as an ambassador for our sport. But now we don't.
