London Calling
Carlton Reid, the editor of BikeBiz.com, Britain's zesty website for the bike industry, frequently expresses his sympathy to RBR.
Reid is as high tech as anyone we know, but we're stuck with a dial-up internet connection. Without broadband we miss out on lots of the original stuff he's doing.
For example, he has recently created a "'bike maintenance for beginners" set of videos on YouTube at www.youtube.com/group/bicyclemaintenance
Says Reid, "This is a collection of video podcasts that will eventually include very technical video walk-throughs. One of the first vids to be loaded was one for bike virgins about how to use a quick-release." You can see this one-minute show at www.youtube.com/watch?v=GzRWpQIs1KA
In another venture, the energetic Reid is chairing a conference called "Materials in Bicycles" on the eve of the 2007 Tour de France, which starts in London.
The meeting will feature speakers such as Alex Moulton, Chris Boardman and Mike Burrows (the person credited for originating the compact road frame). Site is the headquarters of the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining in a building that backs onto the mall where the Tour prologue will be staged on July 7.
Conference emphasis will be on the use of carbon fiber in frame construction, a nod to the fact that composites currently rule the pro peloton. One of the sessions is devoted to the bikes that will be raced in the '07 Tour.
If you'll be in London for the race, you're welcome to register for this day-long meeting. Details at www.iom3.org/EVENTS/0707_bicycles.htm
