In a few years I'll be moving up another age group category Wondering if there's any data out there on average increase/decrease in times (by distance) by age group? It seems to me that (in general) the peak occurs around 30-34 and 35-39 where experience and training volume are at a max.

Daz, best I can offer is to check the Hawaii qualifiers at one of the bigger European races. I to move up an age group (and turn veteran ) after next year so I've had a look at how quick I'd need to be to qualify. It does seem that the 30-34 is the fastest group in the longer distance races but because of the way the slots are split it also means that moving up an age group means you have to go faster to qualify due to the lower number of places available. I'd need to go faster at 40 to qualify than I would at 39. A few races go against this trend but they're the hardcore races like IMUK and Lanzarote which attracts it's own special kind of nut case.

It's quite clear that the most competitive age group is the one that you're currently in! Just wait till you hit the 70-80 bunch. They'll eat you for lunch (teeth out obviously). ;D

oi! ill prob be doing lanza and imuk next year. you're right though and i think the 35-39, 40-44, 45-49 AGs are getting tougher every year. Thats what happens when a sport becomes popular so quickly.....the 20 and 30somethings have had a few years of experience behind them! oi! ill prob be doing lanza and imuk next year. Seems like a great combination of races, I've got one pencilled in and one confirmed. Just depends how the winter goes for before entering Lanzarote, I'd love to do it but no need to confirm just yet, I'll see how it goes. Lanza as a training race - it's the way forward. ;D

I'm moving up to 35-39 next year. I don't think the winning times drop by that much betwen these groups, but 35-39 tends to be the biggest age group so usually gets the most Hawaii/Clearwater slots (followed by 30-34), so you stand more chance of getting a slot with a lower finish, especially through the roll down. As you move up to the older age groups, the numbers start to drop off again so the slot allocation becomes less generous and you have to perform relatively better. An example of this would be DaleCannonman at Longleat last year where he had to finish in something like the top 4 for a Clearwater slot in 50-54 but just missed out while the last 30-34 slot went to someone who finished in the 40s in his age group.
