I see a few of the Scottish events on entrycentral make mention of a race licence and its benefits if going for more than one or two races, but the triathlonscotland site doesn't seem to explain the situation any further. If I'm still in Scotland next year then I expect to enter a few races and I'm wondering about joining triscotland (maybe even a local club, but let's not get too scociable just yet ). Anyone in a position to clarify?

The triscotland licence will get you a few quid (looking at entry central up to £9)of most races in Scotland, I think the licence came in around £25. You also get a handbook, a newsletter and counted on the rankings system. You can also use the licence abroad as well. I should point out that alot of Scottish races are comparitivley cheap compared to there english counterparts. I've entered 3 scottish races and an ironman abroad so it's paid for itself.
Not a great reply, but try the triscotland forum, bit slow but should get something in the end.

Things are changing a bit next year though that there will be an extra £2 surcharge on the first race you enter in order that you join triathlonscotland and then subsequently if you don't have a race license you pay the £7 or whatever extra for a day license. A year's license will cost around £30. The first race exception will come in the case of club members who will automatically be triathlonscotland members assuming the club's agree to pay it or get it paid to them.
It's definitely worth it and I've heard a sneaky rumour that with the introduction of BT rather than the two separate bodies there will be no upcharge to the full BT membership if members wanted to race for GB or for the additional insurance abroad.
Again, as the kaiser says the triathlonscotland forum will get you a reply, catwalk from tritalk (Tom Chambers) is the president of triathlonscotland and can clarify.

I think Trex is up on my point of confusion - £2 goes to membership but it's not membership... or something. I think it's just badly worded and the position should be clarified. I've given up on the triscotland site as a bit worthlesss - more scottish events listed on the UK site and what seems a snails pace forum! I can get more feedback here on things Scottish!
Hopefully I will know by tomorrow if it is at all relevant as I might be moving down to Leicester come the New Year - then there will be a whole slew of new questions!
(and as a niggly point - one has a licenCe (noun) but one licenSes (verb) - think adviCe versus adviSe - something my time in IP tought me)

Thanks for the clarification triskele, I'm similarly confused with affects and effects.
I originally liked the new design of the tri scotland site, however it does seem to just be a design manifestation and doesn't have the info that is valuable to us on it (results / fixtures and details of licensing (is that right?))
