1) Back wheel off and clean the cassette first (otherwise the chain will just muck up again straight away)
2) Put wheel back on and use a rag with a bit of chain oil on it and rub it up and down the chain as you rotate the cranks (do it forwards on a turbo if you can)
3) After you've done the entire length of the chain, clean the jockey wheels on the derailleur
4) Do the chain again
5) Sorted
I think taking the chain off is more hassle than it's worth to be honest

I used to do the old beardie way of cleaning the chain but I'm a recent convert to one of those cassette-thingies - fit two halves of the cassette on top and underneath chain, clamp together, fill the reservoir with degreaser and just turn pedals to freewheel chain through the degreaser.
Then just remove cassette, allow to dry, the lube.
Dead easy and I didn't get any grease under my nails (occupational hazard!)

Hmm, tough one. I'd tried a fair few of the chain cleaner things and then given up on them as they always fell apart when I didn't want them too, never let the chain run smoothly through and ended up driving me mad. So I wen back to the old skool toothbrush and rag method.
However now I use the white lightening system - a two halves thing that not only works, but has the fluid in an aerosol can built in. Works really really well.
As for the commute bike, then I've not cleaned for months since fitting the scotoiler system - working 10/10 and a definite recommendation for any training / commuting bike.

I clean my chain in two ways, one for a regular light clean, and the other for deep cleansing, for a light clean the following
Oil the chain and leave it for about five minutes, then taking a clean cloth put it round the chain and turn the pedals round to wipte the chain clean. Remove the back wheel and clean the cassette and the jockey wheels on the derailliuer (sp?), with a peice of cloth and then refit the wheel and oil the chain again, before you ride the bike wipe the chain clean of any excess oil.
For a deep clean
Remove the chain and place it in an old water bottle full of degreaser. Shake it vigorously repeatedly leave it overnight and in the morning give it another good shake, and take the chain out, and hang it up to let all the degreaser drain off, then clean the cassette and jockey wheels thoroughly before refiting it to your bike.
