I read somewhere that this could improve my swim times and/or technique... But when I googled it I got some VERY worrying results How can that possibly translate to better times??

Maybe you could investigate and find out?
Possibly a 1000m TT w/o 'fisting' and then one 'post fisting'.
Report back on your findings?

Fist for 20 minutes non-stop then open up and use your full hand immediately. You'll be amazed at the difference

Do 12m with clenched fist then slowly open hand for rest of length, should get a better feel for the water, as you use your forarm to pull and not just fist.
Try 2x50 m sets.
As part of warm up drills.

As part of warm up drills. This is what I was going to post - its not the actual fisting, its the using the forearm more effectively - you can feel the difference and worth throwing in a bit of fisting to get a better feel of the water.

...try a series of drill repeats as follows: 100m front crawl with paddles really concentrating on long strokes with high elbows then switch to 100m fists trying to maintain the same style, finally switch to 100m full stroke, no clenched fists and feel the difference.
