although I have a sporting background, I have never competed in anything race wise since a HM in 1989......
I am quite nervous about my first event. At the moment I have entered the Blackpool HM in Feb and the Stratford Spring in May with a goal of the Chester/Salford Oly and then the Vit as a finale
But I need to get some race experience.....but it needs to be at a level that I can compete with.......at present I can swim 400m in about 8min45sec and run 10k in 49mins....not sure what I can do on a road bike as I have been working hard on the MTB (until xmas and then swap)....
can anyone recommend some events that I can do for experience in the early part of the year without looking and feeling like a snail ??

You can't beat your local club's sprint race for an early season blast out. Although it's 'only' a club race competition will range from mighty fast (Conan does my local race) to the have-a-go people. These kind of races are not only good for a blast but they'll give you an excellent idea on how to pace your race, how you feel changing from one sport to the other and what it's like to race. You'll get a long list of things to work on before your main race of the year. It's surprisingly lonely in a sprint race, you'll have whole sections of the bike ride where you'll not see anyone. It's all good experience and great fun.
So my suggestion is whatever your local pool based sprint is. Usually around late April/early May time.

:Pthere are a few local duathlons in Jan/Feb, but I am not convinced that there will be anything other than seasoned athletes there......but I might just have a do in any case.

Wiganer, how about doing a few novice tris as well while you have the chance. There are plenty out there. Good to mix with others and not so bad if you make mistakes. and from your times and spirit you should do well in them as well as the opens.

The Chorley Duathlon series is quite good for novices as well.
You will be ok at the Parbold Duathlon. There is a wide range of both age & standard.

lee...get yourself into the Vit...dont worry about the swim as it is 10months off.....seriously get yourself a coach and you will be sorted....

ive got a coach wig, my swimming isnt as bad as im letting on, i started not being able to swim at all really, now 400m is just a warm up to my drills, and thats took just 2.5 months, its the breaks i have to take during the 400m that worries me, (every 100m i take 20secs to recover and i need it too) once they are eliminated OW swims are my next challenge.
i would love to do the vit though and if not next year the year after is mine !!

wiggy mate dont worry about entering races where as you say"seasoned athletes" in my humble opinion its the best way to go, as your more likely to pick up some good tips and learn stuff, after the race you can ask question, learn stuff and so on..... good luck with the vit i am sure you chaps will do just fine.
funny, you get newbies come on TT post that they are slow and dont know what they are doing, then pitch up at a race and kick my and lots of other people's bum's, which i am sure you would do ;D good luck for the up and coming season.
